Institute for Advanced Religious Studies
General Information
The ISSR at the Appollinare was erected by the congregation for Catholic Education, on the 17th of September, 1986. On June 10th 1998, with the decree no. 170/92/19 of the same congregation, new statutes were approved which made the ISSR an academic center and integral part of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. Mentioned as characteristic of this Institute is its peculiar method of distance learning.

Theological deepening of the faith is a necessary condition for carrying out the 'new evangelization' to which today's Christians are called: the ISSR, with its 'distance learning' courses in theology, makes this formation available to all faithful - lay faithful, priests and religious - who do not have the possibility of attending regular courses at institutions of higher learning for religious sciences. Aimed at a specific milieu, this institute does not enter into competition with valid institutions existing in the various territories, but on the contrary offers the necessary complement for the diffusion of theological formation at a scientific level.

The courses of the Institute are carried out under the guide and academic supervision of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.

The Institute in collaboration with the publishing house, Apollinare Studi, undertakes the publication of the series, Religious Sciences Library.

At the heart of the Institute is the Course of Religious Sciences, a five-year course that concludes with a Teaching Diploma in Religious Sciences, recognized as an ecclesiastical academic qualification. The same Diploma can be obtained at the end of a regular four-year course. The course has been approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education and also by the Italian Bishops Conference.

The Institute also organizes other courses of a two year duration: a biblical course that ends with a Diploma of Biblical Formation and a course on Christian Culture of the Family and of Education with the corresponding Diploma.
The objectives of the institute are:
a) the theological formation of the laity and religious, promoting a deeper knowledge of religious issues
b) to offer the necessary qualifications to teach religion in schools at every level
c) preparation for the ministries and service in the local communities, in close collaboration with the Hierarchy (permanent deacons, catechists, liturgical animators, pastoral workers etc.)
d) the preparation of candidates to different offices in religious communities
e) the preparation necessary in carrying out apostolic initiatives of a lay nature
f) updating the theological formation of priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful
