Art for Christ’s Sake
Maria Way
Cinema is usually considered the seventh art but television is often denigrated and not considered even in the same books as cinema. This paper will consider whether religious broadcasting falls into the category of an "art" or whether it is, in fact, something of a lower order.
Whilst the paper will utilise some concrete examples of religious broadcasting, it will attempt this analysis through the use of Roland Barthes‚ work, particularly Image, Music, Text (1977) and also through the work of Aristotle, particularly his De Anima, Politica and De Poetica (using McKeon’s (1941: 2001) translations in The Basic Works of Aristotle. The Modern Library: New York).
